Second meeting - August 27-29, 2019

The second meeting consisted of presentations of all partners, visit to the lab, Cordouan Technologies and fruitful discussions.

Florian Aubrit (Cordouan and LCPO) first presents the design and characteristics of the multi-angle depolarized dynamic light scattering (DDLS) prototype built. Then he presents several physicochemical systems synthesized: hybrid flexible filaments made by electrostatic assembly of magnetic iron oxide NPs (coated by polyanions) and other types of negatively charged fluorescent metal nanoclusters of Cu or AuAg. Andrejs Cebers shows experimental results of magnetic beads with DNA linkers and theory where he considers fluctuations of flexible ferromagnetic rods and calculates their magnetic susceptibility by balancing magnetic torque with bending elasticity and viscous friction. Mathus Molcan presents results on FMF extracted from magnetotactic bacteria: IM batch (just isolated chains) vs SM (shorter chains obtain by ultrasounds 20kHz at 280W for 1h). He also compared measurements of relaxation time with estimated results by Andrejs Cebers theory of FMF. Olivier Sandre reports preliminary results on photothermal (PTT) effect of anisotropic Au NPs and magneto-plasmonic nanohybrids under NIR laser irradiation, obtained during a MSc thesis of student Clément Thérond. Martins Brics presents theoretical study of energetically favorable configurations of ferromagnetic hematite microcubes. Milan Timco introduces magnetic textiles, based on natural or synthetic fibers, with different envisioned applications (antistatic or antibacterial surfaces, magnetic hyperthermia, implants…). Peter Kopcansky speaks about Amyloid protein fibrils that are involved in Parkinson decease. Usual question is what does cause amyloid aggregation. David Jacob gives presentation about history of Cordouan company.

Several conclusions about further collaboration between teams were formulated.

Kickoff meeting - October 4, 2018

The kick-off meeting consisted of presentations of all partners, visit to the lab and fruitful discussions. Here is the program.

A.Cebers gave the review of theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches developed for flexible magnetic filaments in the Laboratory of Soft Magnetic Materials (MMML) of the University of Latvia. G.Kitenbergs reviewed experimental facilities developed in MMML for microfluidics to study magnetic microconvection and microrheology. O.Sandre gave a review on synthesis of magnetic rods based on incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles in copolymers. P.Kopcansky overviewed research carried out in Institute of Experimental Physics (IEP) and in particular the extraction and investigation of the properties of chains of magnetosomes, what was detailed by M.Molcan. D.Jacob reviewed equipment produced in Cordouan Technologies and elaboration of new facilities for DLS measurements based on depolarized scattering. F.Aubrit gave more details on the DLS samples and measurements.

Several conclusions about further collaboration between teams were formulated, in particular, the measurement of magnetic susceptibility of magnetosome chain ensembles in AC field by IEP to approbate the theoretical models developed in MMML, depolarized DLS measurements by Cordouan Technologies to investigate the properties of chains of magnetosomes prepared by IEP, incorporation of fluorescent markers (Cordouan Technologies) in chains of magnetosomes to study the deformation and possibly self-propulsion of chains of magnetosomes (IEP) and, if successful, theoretical description of obtained results (MMML)
